PSU's Cornely Considering Football

The Centre Daily Times is reporting that Penn State power forward Jamelle Cornley, a physically impressive 6-4, 248lbs man, is considering his future options after graduation from Penn State and one of those options could be football.  Chances are Cornely would end up playing the tight end position,  a position many skilled basketball players have transitioned well to, most notably NFL tight ends Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez.   “When you look at my frame compared to some other guys’ frames, and then you look at the athleticism and the hunger, there’s something to consider,” Cornley said.  “Maybe I need to get popped one good time to realize that maybe that’s not my sport, but right now it’s something I’m thinking about doing.”

Cornely, if he were to desire such a move, would have one year of eligibility left at the collegiate level since he did not take his redshirt year at Penn State.  As long as he graduates and then takes graduate school classes he would be eligible to play another year of college athletics off the hardwood.  This is all just speculation at this point as Cornley is also considering his options possibly getting a chance in the NBA or venturing overseas to play professional basketball in Europe.  It also would be very unlikely that Penn State head coach Joe Paterno would agree to Cornely trying his hand at football as a Nittany Lion.  It ultimately just does not seem like an endeavor that Joe Paterno would find appropriate for the team.

There is also the small issue of a separated shoulder that Cornely suffered during the season.  The Centre Daily Times reports that surgery was recommended to fix the shoulder putting him out of action five to six months negating any realistic shot of playing football this year.
